Barend Tromp, fretted and
fretless four and six string basses

About the author

Barend Tromp is a bass player and composer from the Netherlands. He studied classical guitar at the Conservatory of Tilburg and Music Science at the University of Amsterdam. Barend subsequently studied sitar in India and upright bass with several private teachers. Both guitar and sitar have a great influence on his bass playing. He plays chords, strumming, slapping and uses various fingerstyle techniques. By combining all these techniques he creates his own unique style. Barend also teaches at various music schools and is a long time contributor to the Dutch printed Bass magazine De Bassist. He has also published two guitar books.

Besides normal 4-string bass and 6-string bass he also loves playing fretless bass. Adventurous players such as Stanley Clarke, Percy Jones, Michael Manring, Les Claypool and Tony Levin have an influence on his bass style.

Listening to old Ravi Shankar records from his grandfather made Barend decide to start playing sitar. It resulted in a long journey learning the instrument and Indian classical music. Barend also lived in India for six months where he had sitar lessons every day. These six months were a real boost for his playing. The last few years has seen him incorporate Indian classical music into the repertoire of several fusion groups.

In 2021 Barend released his well-received solo album “Six Against Four” on which he plays all instruments himself. In October 2022 Subcontinetal Records from India released an instrumental concept album called “Juvenile Fish Tales”. Each of the eleven songs represents a different fish. As a child Barend got a book for his birthday about the underwater world that left a great impression on him. Fantasising about each of the fish that he saw in the pictures; this is what inspired him to make this album. Barend’s bass hero and famous American bass player Michael Manring plays a guest role on this album. It is hard to pigeonhole his music. Elements from fusion, funk, world music, 70’s prog and electronic music are combined with fresh ideas and original approaches to composing.
